West Side Story — one of the most beloved American musicals — was created by four Jews: Arthur Laurents (book), Leonard Bernstein (music), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) and Jerome Robbins (conception and choreography). The plot revolved around conflict between a white street gang and a Puerto Rican street gang on the Upper West Side of New York City; it was loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The musical made its Broadway debut in 1957 and since then has been mounted in cities around the world. A 1961 movie version garnered 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
