Volodymyr Zelensky, a 41-year-old Ukrainian comedian and comedic actor who played the country’s president in a hit satirical TV show, was elected the actual president of Ukraine on April 21. Zelesky won 73% of the vote, trouncing the incumbent, Petro Poroshenko. That would be astonishing enough, but the fact that Zelensky is a Jew in a country with a long history of virulent antisemitism makes his election all the more incredible. Interestingly — and perhaps tellingly — we have not come across even one online report about Zelensky that mentions he’s Jewish. He is the son of two Jewish parents, but does he himself identify as a Jew? Is it possible that Ukrainian voters didn’t even know about his Jewish heritage?! Seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened.
UPDATE from The Jerusalem Post:
“Born in Kryvyi Rih, near Dnipro, to a Jewish family of scientists, Zelensky rarely speaks of his Jewish ancestry in interviews. But unlike some Ukrainian politicians widely believed to have Jewish roots, Zelensky during his campaign neither disputed his Jewish ancestry nor attempted to camouflage it.”
Quote: “In a March 2019 interview with Der Spiegel, Zelensky stated he went into politics to restore trust in politicians and that he wanted ‘to bring professional, decent people to power’ and ‘would really like to change the mood and timbre of the political establishment, as much as possible.'” — Wikipedia
