Thomas (Tom) Friedman, 65, is a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winner and the author of a weekly New York Times column. While working for United Press International, he was assigned to Beirut, Lebanon, from 1979 to 1981, during which time he covered the Lebanese civil war. For nearly four years, he was the Jerusalem bureau chief for The New York Times. Friedman frequently appears on television as a current events commentator.
