Theodore Herzl (May 2, 1860 – July 3, 1904) is considered to be the father of modern political Zionism and is officially recognized in Israel’s Declaration of Independence as “the spiritual father of the Jewish state.” A Jewish Austro-Hungarian journalist, playwright, political activist, and writer, Herzl formed the Zionist Organization and, in 1897, chaired the First Zionist Congress. He indefatigably promoted Jewish immigration to Palestine in an effort to form a Jewish nation. Theodore Herzl is buried on Mt. Herzl in Jerusalem.
Quote: “Nothing prevents us from being and remaining the exponents of a united humanity, when we have a country of our own. To fulfill this mission we do not have to remain literally planted among the nations who hate and despise us.” ||| “It goes without saying that the Jewish people can have no other goal than Palestine and that, whatever the fate of the proposition may be, our attitude toward the land of our fathers is and shall remain unchangeable.”
