When it comes to zany antics, slapstick shticks and hilarious hijinks, no one on the American comedy scene has ever matched, let alone surpassed, the genius of the Three Stooges. The original troupe consisted of Moe Howard (Moses Harry Horwitz); Larry Fine (Louis Feinberg); Shemp Howard (Samuel Horowitz) and Curley Howard (Jerome Lester Horwitz) — with only three of the four appearing at any one time. There were two other notable replacements — Joe Besser and Joe DeRita (the only non-Jewish Stooge) — not surprising since the Stooges performed from 1922 to 1970. Their much-loved 190 short-subject films continue to be shown on television to this day.
