Based at New York’s Yeshiva University (whose athletic teams are named the Maccabees), the Maccabeats 14-member male acapella singing group specializes in applying Jewish-themed lyrics to popular secular tunes, often resulting in catchy songs for various Jewish holidays. The group has put out three albums and one EP; in addition, they’ve performed at the White House and the Knesset (the Israeli parliament). They have also toured throughout the world. Maccabeats member Ari Lewis is quoted as saying the group’s ideal is “living a life of Torah and Judaism, and simultaneously a successful secular life.”
