The massive destruction and terrible injuries and loss of life in Beirut have touched the entire world — and Israel is no exception. Right after the horrific event, the Israeli government offered humanitarian aid to Lebanon, and Tel Aviv’s city hall was lit up to resemble the Lebanese flag as a sign of solidarity. Ordinary Israelis recorded messages expressing their condolences and support {see video linked below). As of this writing, Israel has not received any official response.
It should be noted that the Israeli gestures have engendered some controversy in the Jewish nation, which considers Lebanon to be an “enemy state.” And while no response from the government of Lebanon has been proffered, individual Lebanese have expressed outraged rejection of the offer in vituperative and hate-filled messages.
Quote: “Israel has thus deployed support globally. It stands to reason that it could be of assistance in Lebanon — and every hour that Lebanese authorities do not agree to Israel’s support or facilitate an aid mission, they are passing up a unique opportunity. The reason Lebanese authorities remained silent in the morning hours of August 5 regarding Israel’s offers is likely due to Hezbollah’s stranglehold on Lebanon.” — article in The Jerusalem Post by Seth Frantzman
