Researchers may have unraveled a conundrum that has puzzled scholars of the Dead Sea Scrolls for years: Why is the so-called Temple Scroll dissimilar from all the rest? It is brighter and has better withstood the destructive effects of the last two millennia. It now appears that a layer of inorganic substances — mainly salts — was added to the dried animal skin on which the text was inscribed.
Quotes: “Researchers say the Temple Scroll, which has survived in better condition than other texts, was modified using previously unknown technology with minerals not local to the region.” | “The finding suggests ‘a unique ancient production technology in which the parchment was modified through the addition of the inorganic layer as a writing surface,’ the researchers wrote.”
