For Americans of a certain age, Edward James Martin “Ted” Koppel needs no introduction: He was the host of Nightline, a late-night news program on ABC, from 1980 to 2005. The show originated in 1979 with a series of reports on the Iran hostage crisis (it was initially hosted by Frank Reynolds). In March 1980, it took on the name Nightline and Ted Koppel became its long-running host. Since leaving the program, Koppel has remained active as a TV news analyst; currently, the 77-year-old Koppel is a special contributor to CBS News Sunday Morning.
