Dr. Steven Pinker, a professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard, is recognized as one of the world’s most influential intellectuals. The 64-year-old Pinker is the author of eight mainstream books, including How the Mind Works, The Blank Slate, The Better Angels of Our Nature and — his most recent — Enlightenment Now. He was interviewed about his latest book by Stephen Fry, English comedian, actor, writer and noted intellectual in his own right. During the conversation, Pinker discussed “the challenges we face in the 21st century and what we need to do to defend the values and ideas of the Enlightenment.” Topics included the innate faculties of human beings; whether human nature is infinitely malleable; whether there is a purpose to the universe; how to expand human empathy and altruism; and ways humanity has made great progress.
