Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Stephen A. Schwarzman recently donated $188 million to the University of Oxford for the study of the ethical ramifications of artificial intelligence — among other things. The donation will fund the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, which will include a new Institute for Ethics in AI. Last year, he donated $350 million to M.I.T. for a new college of computing, which also will be named after the benefactor. Schwarzman, 72, is the co-founder, CEO, and Chairman of the investment firm The Blackstone Group.
Quote: “For nearly 1,000 years, the study of the Humanities at Oxford has been core to western civilization and scholarship. We need to ensure that its insights and principles can be adapted to today’s dynamic world.” | “It is essential that philosophy and ethics engages with those disciplines developing and using AI. If AI is to benefit humanity, we must understand its moral and ethical implications.” — statement by Stephen Schwarzman
