TIKKUN OLAM is Hebrew for “repairing the world.” It is an important concept in Judaism: Human beings must strive to make the world a better, more just place.
Last year, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, 48, donated 290,000 shares of company stock (valued at $31 million) to benefit organizations that promote women’s empowerment — including LeanIn.org, the nonprofit she founded. In 2012, Sandberg was named to Time magazine’s “annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.” She suffered a personal tragedy in 2015 when her husband, Dave Goldberg, died suddenly from a heart arrhythmia (not from falling off a treadmill, as was originally reported). She has since renamed the Lean In Foundation: It is now the Sheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Foundation, of which LeanIn.org is one part.
