Shaare Zedek Medical Center (SZMC) is a large hospital in Jerusalem affiliated with Hebrew University. (The name means “Gates of Justice” in Hebrew.) Zanzibar is an archipelago with 800,000 inhabitants, almost all of them Moslems. Located 18 miles off the east coast of Africa, it is a semi-autonomous part of the nation of Tanzania.
Prof. Gabriel Izbicki, director of the Lung Institute at SZMC, traveled to the main island with his colleagues and learned about the lack of basic medical equipment, as well as the lack of knowledge about certain lung diseases, in local hospitals. A year and a half later, Izbicki arranged to bring a medical team from Zanzibar to Israel for a week of learning. He also collected donations of essential medical equipment for hospitals there.

Quote: “When I asked [Zanzibaris] if they do tests to diagnose asthma and COPD, they said no. I was surprised and asked them if they referred patients to another hospital, and they again said no. I asked why, and they said that neither of them had the necessary medical equipment.”
— Prof. Gabriel Izbicki
