Professor Ruth Arnon, 87, is a renowned Israeli biochemist and co-developer of the multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone. She is the Paul Ehrlich Professor of Immunology at the Weizmann Institute of Science, where she is researching anti-cancer and universal influenza vaccinations — meaning the flu vaccine won’t have to be changed every year to be effective against mutations in the flu virus. Arnon was the first woman to be elected President of the Israeli Academy of Sciences.
Quote: “We identified areas in these two proteins [in flu virus] that do not change… Then we worked with only two proteins of the virus, and we vaccinated with these [proteins] four segments in tests of mice. Mice that were exposed to flue strains just like humans. And the mice were 100% protected against the various strains of flu that we exposed them to.”
