Richard Serra is a renowned artist known for his enormous steel sculptures, monumental “installation drawings,” printmaking, performance and video art, and more. The now 82-year-old Serra created the sculpture Berlin Junction as a memorial to those who lost their lives to the Nazi genocide program; it was eventually installed permanently at the Berliner Philharmonie. For the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, he designed Gravity, a 10-inch-thick, 10-foot-square standing slab of steel.
Quotes: “What interests me is the opportunity for all of us to become something different from what we are, by constructing spaces that contribute something to the experience of who we are.” | “I consider space to be a material. The articulation of space has come to take precedence over other concerns. I attempt to use sculptural form to make space distinct.”
