It is no secret that the U.S. is in the throes of a deadly epidemic of opioid addiction: An estimated 41,000 Americans died as a result of opioid overdoses in 2016 alone. (An additional 21,000 died that year from other drug overdoses.) In an important and timely article published by the Forward in August 2017, writer Bethany Mandel made a compelling case that the Jewish community must stop being in denial about the topic. Wrote Mandel: “It’s time we as Jews acknowledged that we have a problem, and start to address it.”
