From 1991 to 2013, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, 69, was Chief Rabbi of the Orthodox U.K. organization United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth. A world-renowned philosopher, theologian and political activist, Rabbi Sacks is also a prolific writer and public speaker on Jewish and general topics. In the video linked below — recorded at the University of California, Santa Barbara — he relates his vision of the future of Judaism and the Jewish people. That vision includes two principles for strengthening respect, cooperation and peace among Jews who practice various streams of Judaism. He also discusses three major challenges he sees confronting the Jewish people: the “new” antisemitism, internal dissention and assimilation/secularization.
