In October 2018, the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh suffered a horrific antisemitic attack that left 11 worshipers dead and many others injured (including the rabbi). In the wake of that assault, the Muslim community in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area responded magnificently with concern and financial support. A fund the community set up to assist the synagogue and its members — with an original goal of collecting $70,000 — raised approximately $200,000. In the aftermath of a similar attack against two mosques in New Zealand in March of this year — which left 51 dead and many injured — the Pittsburgh Jewish community established its own fund to help the victims in Christchurch.
Quote: “Unfortunately we are all too familiar with the devastating effect a mass shooting has on a faith community. We are filled with grief over this senseless act of hate. May those who were injured heal quickly and fully, and may the memories of the victims forever be a blessing.” — Meryl Ainsman, chair of the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh.
