Tikkun olam is Hebrew for “repairing the world” and is a central principle of Judaism.
Peter Shankman is a 46-year-old entrepreneur, author and sought-after lecturer. Also, a wizard of sorts: He magically transforms airline frequent-flier miles into a vehicle for tikkun olam (repairing the world). For the past five years, Shankman has donated his miles to families who, without his help, would not be in a financial position to visit loved ones during the holiday season. He has a lot of frequent-flier miles to give away: He travels constantly all over the country on speaking engagements, earning him some 200,000 miles annually. Shankman’s generosity may not be world-changing, but it shows one person can help move humanity in the right direction.
