Pamela S. Karlan, 61, is a professor at Stanford Law School and an expert on voting rights and political process. From 2014 to 2015, Karlan was U.S. Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Voting Rights in the United States Department of Justice Civil Division. A vocal critic of President Donald J. Trump, she testified at his 2019 impeachment hearing. Her opening statement is linked below.
Quote: “I mean, we have a president who, for the first time, at least in my lifetime, does not even give lip service to the idea that this country is a democracy and that people should participate in the government. And that you need a free press. So instead of the Declaration of Independence, we now have ‘We hold this alternative reality to be self-evident.’ ”
