In October 2019, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was awarded the prestigious Berggruen Prize for her longtime advocacy of human rights. The prize comes with $1 million in award money, which goes to a philanthropic organization of Justice Ginsburg’s choosing. The 86-year-old Ginsburg — soon to turn 87 — has been a jurist on the Supreme Court for more than a quarter-century. “Notorious RBG” — as she is affectionately known — has overcome numerous severe health problems in recent years.
Quote: “By grit and determination, brains, courage, compassion and a fiery commitment to justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg rose from modest beginnings to become one of the most respected, and most beloved, jurists of our time.” — Nicolas Berggruen, founder of the Berggruen Prize
