Netta Barzilai — professionally known simply as Netta — is a 26-year-old trailblazing Israeli singer who won top prize in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, held in Lisbon, Portugal. (Her victory brought the 2019 edition of the hugely popular competition to Tel Aviv.) Netta is trailblazing in a number of ways, including her physical size, fashion sense, dance moves, and singing style — which includes producing unusual vocal sounds not regularly heard from pop singers. Now a worldwide sensation, she’s a committed advocate for diversity and accepting people as they are.
Quote: “I want to be the person I needed when I was nine. When I was nine years old, when I heard music, when I saw billboards, when I saw magazines, there was only one color of beauty, one size, one sound of music. All of it’s been the same for so many years. People are so afraid to break these boxes. I feel that it’s time. We’re busy being so unhappy with who we are, we’re trying to change that all of our lives. Why? Why are we running away from our destiny?”
