July 29, 2016 — U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus has announced that a tanker ship, still to be built, will be named the USNS Harvey Milk. The name is in honor of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors member who was assassinated — along with Mayor George Moscone —by disgruntled former supervisor Dan White. Milk (May 22, 1930 – November 27, 1978) was California’s first openly gay elected official. In the early 1950s he served as a Navy diving instructor during the Korean War. He reportedly was wearing his Navy belt buckle when he was killed.
