The Jewish community of Morocco once numbered more than 250,000; now only a few hundred are left in the country following several waves of emigration. Jews originally migrated to Morocco following the expulsion from Spain in 1492 and the expulsion from Portugal in 1497. The Jews of Morocco created a rich musical culture, one that is in danger of disappearing altogether. Scholars and activists are trying to keep it alive.

Quote: “Today, most of those women, members of Morocco’s dwindling Jewish population, are gone. But they have left behind a rich historical trove of northern Judeo-Moroccan Sephardic culture, passed on from one generation to the next through oral history, that scholars of Judaism are striving to preserve before it disappears.”
