Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, 78, has become the second Jewish politician seeking the nomination of the Democratic Party for President of the United States. He follows Vermont senator Bernie Sanders in seeking the nation’s highest office.
Bloomberg, who served as mayor of New York from 2002 to 2011, is a self-made media mogul who reportedly has more than $50 billion dollars. He could easily finance a campaign for the presidency; indeed, Bloomberg has already stated no matter who wins the party’s nomination, he is willing to contribute up to $1 billion to help defeat Donald J. Trump.
One possible stumbling block in Bloomberg’s path to the White House: the controversial “Stop and Frisk” policy he initiated while he was mayor. Bloomberg recently said the policy — which many decry as racial profiling of African-Americans — was a mistake and apologized for it.
Quote: “My father, a bookkeeper who never earned more than $11,000 a year in his life, sat there, writing out a $25 check to the NAACP. When I asked him why, he said discrimination against anyone is discrimination against us all. And I never forgot that. Indeed, his philanthropy was a gift, not just to that organization, but to me.”
