In a world-first, Israeli surgeons have transplanted an artificial meniscus into a patient via a small incision in the knee. The NUsurface implant was developed in Israel by a research and development team of the Memphis, Tennessee-based company Active Implants. The meniscus is a crescent-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee joint and other places in the human body. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has awarded the revolutionary implant a Breakthrough Device Designation, providing for an expedited approval process in America.
Quote: “Filling the gap in treatment options between minimally invasive meniscus repair and total knee replacement is a large unmet need in the orthopedic market. The NUsurface Implant was invented and developed in our R&D center in Israel, so for us it is very exciting to finally bring the device to people in Israel.” — Ted Davis, president and CEO of Active Implants
