Allan “Bud” Selig, 85, was commissioner of American Major League Baseball for more than two decades — from 1992 (when he was named acting commissioner) to 2015, when he retired. Selig was credited for the enormous rise in MLB revenues and attendance during his long tenure. He weathered a number of storms while he was commissioner, chief among them a steroid scandal involving MLB players.
Quote: “I am saddened by the recent announcements of violations of baseball’s drug program. There exists some doubt in the public sector about our sincerity in eliminating steroids from the game. That is wrong. We must create an understanding everywhere that when we say we need to rid the game of steroids, we mean it.”
