Russian-American journalist, author and translator Maria Alexandrovna “Masha” Gessen’s writing has appeared frequently in The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The New Republic, New Statesman, Vanity Fair and others. Gessen is an open lesbian; she famously noted that for many years she probably was “the only publicly out gay person in the whole country [Russia].” The 50-year-old Gessen lives in New York City but has spent time back in Russia working as a journalist and translator.
