In 2014, Democrat Elizabeth “Libby” Schaaf (54) won her first term as mayor of Oakland with 62.79% of the vote. She was reelected in 2018 with 27% more votes than her opponent. Prior to entering politics, Shaaf was an attorney in Oakland – where she was born and raised – and program director for the Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute, creating and running a new volunteer program for the Oakland Unified School District. In 2010, she was elected to the Oakland City Council.
Quote: “I’m not going to let the bullies in Washington, DC, deter me from doing what I know is right for my community. In Oakland, we’re very clear about what our values are. We value our immigrant communities. We value diversity. And we will not allow anyone to intimidate us. We will not apologize for those values.”
