Leonard Bernstein (Aug. 25, 1918 — Oct. 14, 1990) has been acclaimed as perhaps the greatest musical genius of the 20th century, and as “one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history.” Bernstein was a revered orchestra conductor who spent many years on the podium of the New York Philharmonic, as well as conducting other prominent orchestras in Europe and elsewhere. In addition, he was a teacher, pianist, and composer; he created the scores for West Side Story, Peter Pan, Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town, and On the Waterfront, among others.
Quotes: “The key to the mystery of a great artist is that for reasons unknown, he will give away his energies and his life just to make sure that one note follows another… and leaves us with the feeling that something is right in the world.” | “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”
