Dr. Katie Bouman is a 29-year-old computer scientist involved in the first successful effort to photograph a black hole. She played a prominent role in developing the algorithm that made this groundbreaking feat possible; in addition, she was a member of Harvard’s Event Horizon Telescope team that captured the amazing image. Bouman is set to become an assistant professor of computing and mathematical sciences at the California Institute of Technology.
Quote: “We had developed and tested our algorithms for years on data we thought would mimic that of the Event Horizon Telescope, but still there are always surprises in data. Pressing ‘Go’ on a computer program I had written and immediately seeing a ring come into focus for the first time was amazing and exhilarating.”
