Judy Blume, 79, has written published fiction for children and young adults since 1969; she’s sold more than 82 million copies translated into 32 languages. The New Yorker characterized her books as “talismans that, for a significant segment of the American female population, marked the passage from childhood to adolescence.” Titles include Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret; Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing; and Iggie’s House. Although her work has been hugely popular, it has also generated controversy about whether the subject matter is age-appropriate.
