TIKKUN OLAM is Hebrew for “repairing the world.” It is an important concept in Judaism: Human beings must strive to make the world a better, more just place.
Professor Joshua Silver is a U.K. physicist who has dedicated himself to solving one of humanity’s underreported problems: An estimated two billion people in the Third World (as of 2016) need corrective eyeglasses but don’t have them. That has enormous negative implications for education, employment, economies and general human well-being in developing countries. Silver is the inventor of liquid-filled self-adjusting eyeglasses, which wearers themselves can fine-tune to the prescriptions they need. Among other things, that solves this problem: an acute shortage of eye-care professionals in the Third World. Silver is also CEO of the nonprofit organization Centre for Vision in the Developing World.
