As of this writing, President-Elect Joe Biden has named four Jewish men and a Jewish woman to key positions in his administration — all of whom are listed below. Nominees to cabinet-level posts will need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
WHITE HOUSE CHIEF OF STAFF
Ronald “Ron” Klain (59) is an attorney and longtime political consultant. He served as chief of staff for Vice President AL Gore and later Vice President Joe Biden. In addition, President Barack Obama appointed him to be the White House Ebola Response Coordinator in late 2014, serving into early 2015. Klain joined Joe Biden’s presidential campaign as senior adviser in early 2020. Note: For more about Ron Klain, see the GOVERNMENT section of the website. SECRETARY OF STATE
Antony “Tony” Blinken (58) served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State from 2015 to 2017, and Deputy National Security Advisor from 2013 to 2015. Previously, he served in the State Department and in senior positions on the National Security Council staff. He was also a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (2001–2002) and Democratic Staff Director of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations (2002–2008).
SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY
Economist Janet Yellenn (74) served as the Chair of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2018, and as Vice Chair from 2010 to 2014. She was a Federal Reserve Board Governor from 1994 to 1997 and again from 2010 to 2018. From 1997 to 1999, she served as the Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. She was President of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco from 2004 to 2010. If confirmed by the Senate, she will be the first woman Treasury Secretary in U.S. history.
DIRECTOR OF HOMELAND SECURITY
Alejandro Mayorkas (61) is a Cuban-American who immigrated to the United States as a refugee in 1960. In 1998, he became the United States Attorney for the Central District of California. In that position, he created the Civil Rights Section to prosecute hate crimes and other acts of intolerance and discrimination more effectively. He also served as Vice Chair of the Attorney General’s Advisory Subcommittee on Civil Rights and as a member of the Subcommittee on Ethics in Government.
MEMBER, COUNCIL OF ECONOMIC ADVISERS
Jared Bernstein (b. 1955) is a Senior Fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. He sits on the Congressional Budget Office’s Advisory Committee. From 2009 to 2011, Bernstein was the Chief Economist and Economic Adviser to Vice President Joe Biden in the Obama Administration. From 1995 to 1996, he served in the United States Department of Labor as Deputy Chief Economist. Also, he was Executive Director of the Middle Class Working Families Task Force.
