Jesse Appell is a Jewish-American stand-up comic who has been plying his trade in China — in fluent Chinese — for more than seven years. He has become extremely popular in the world’s most populous country, appearing in live shows and on many TV programs. Toward the beginning of the coronavirus crisis Appell returned to the U.S., where he organized and performed at a charity event that raised $10,000 to help the people of Wuhan.
Quote: “We don’t usually see portrayals of China as very funny, but the people there are very funny. The problem is we don’t have a good way right now for regular people in America to see what life is like for regular people in China and vice versa.” — Jesse Appell
