Acclaimed art critic and columnist Jerry Saltz, 69, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2018. Since 2006, he has been the senior art critic for New York magazine; his writing has also appeared in The Village Voice, Art in America, and Modern Painters, among other publications. In addition to the Pulitzer, Saltz has garnered numerous other accolades, including three honorary doctorates. Interestingly, he never attended college.
Quote: “All great contemporary artists, schooled or not, are essentially self-taught and are de-skilling like crazy. I don’t look for skill in art…Skill has nothing to do with technical proficiency… I’m interested in people who rethink skill, who redefine or re-imagine it: an engineer, say, who builds rockets from rocks.”
