In a thought-provoking Ted Talk, Jared Diamond, a noted geographer, historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, lists five influences behind the collapse of societies. When formulating his ideas, Diamond — now 81 — also draws on anthropology, ecology, and evolutionary biology. Not surprisingly, he relates the five factors to today’s world. Perhaps surprisingly, he ends on a somewhat hopeful note: “Since we made the problems, we can also solve the problems.”
