Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who was featured on this website a couple of months ago, has found himself at the epicenter of a protest firestorm — literally, in the case of his city and elsewhere — following the killing of a black man named George Floyd by four white police officers.
One of them — Derek Chauvin — knelt over Floyd and pressed his knee down on the unarmed man’s neck for almost nine minutes; Floyd repeatedly cried out that he couldn’t breathe. That officer has been charged with third-degree murder. The deeply disturbing event has sparked outrage and protests in more than 30 cities around the country; many of the demonstrations have turned violent.
Since rioting began in Minneapolis, Frey has been criticized from several quarters for his allegedly weak efforts to restore order. President Donald Trump tweeted the following: “I can’t stand back and watch this happen to a great American City, Minneapolis. A total lack of leadership. Either the very weak Radical Left Mayor, Jacob Frey, get his act together and bring the City under control, or I will send in the National Guard & get the job done right.”
In response to that tweet, Frey said: “Weakness is refusing to take responsibility for your own actions. Weakness is pointing your fingers at somebody else at a time of crisis. Donald Trump knows nothing about the strength of Minneapolis.” (See the first video linked below.)
UPDATE: The charge against Derek Chauvin has been upgraded to second-degree murder. The other three are being charged with crimes as well. All four have been fired from the Minneapolis Police Department.
This is a developing story in Minneapolis and other U.S. cities.
Quote: “For five minutes [sic], we watched as a white officer pressed his knee to the neck of a black man. When you hear someone calling for help, you are supposed to help. This officer failed in the most basic human sense. What happened on Chicago and 38th this last night is simply awful. It was traumatic and it serves as a clear reminder of just how far we have to go.”
