Over the past few years upwards of 2,600 Syrians — many of them fighters wounded in their country’s civil war — have received medical treatment in Israeli hospitals; more than 25% of those treated have been women and children. With few other options to receive much-needed care, the Syrians make the precarious journey to the Israeli border on the Golan Heights, and from there are brought to medical facilities inside the Jewish state. After they return to Syria, many hide the fact that they were treated in Israel for fear of retribution from their countrymen: Israel and Syria technically remain in a state of war. Still, the experience has a profound effect on how they view a country they’ve always thought of as “the enemy.”
