There are virtually no Jews left in Egypt became of hostility and persecution the once-thriving community faced. Still, the historic Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue in Alexandria recently reopened its doors following an extensive restoration project. The venerable house of worship — the current building dates from the 19th century — partially collapsed in 2016. The Egyptian government rehabilitated the edifice in an effort to preserve a small part of the country’s now largely vanished Jewish community and culture.
Quotes: “I’m very proud of what my country has done, and it symbolizes living together; today there is no difference between Egyptian Muslim, Christian and Egyptian Jew.” — Magda Haroun, head of Cairo’s Jewish community, at the reopening ceremony.
