Until recently, 60-year-old Geoffrey Berman was United States Attorney for the powerful Southern District of New York. He no longer holds that position. Initially, he was pressured to resign by Attorney General William Bar; although Berman refused, he was fired shortly thereafter by President Donald J. Trump. At the time of his firing, Berman was involved in an investigation of Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal attorney. The firing drew a great deal of media attention and was heavily criticized.
Quote: “I learned in a press release from the Attorney General tonight that I was ‘stepping down’ as United States Attorney. I have not resigned, and have no intention of resigning, my position, to which I was appointed by the Judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. i will step down when a presidentially appointed nominee is confirmed by the Senate. Until then, our investigations will move forward without delay or interruption.”
