At 48, Eric Garcetti is the youngest mayor in Los Angeles history and the city’s first Jewish mayor. (Jewish mother, non-Jewish father; he was raised as a Jew and identifies as such.) Garcetti, a member of the Democratic Party, was elected to the city’s top spot in 2013 and reelected in 2017. Before that, he served as a member of the Los Angeles City Council and council president.
Quotes: “People will give you the responsibility, even the authority, to go after the big things, the visionary things, the reaching for incredible opportunities, if they trust that you’re running a city well. And if you don’t run a city well, conversely, you can’t do the big things.”
