Dr. Cyril Wecht, 91, is an attorney, but his major contribution to American legal proceedings has been as a forensic scientist — especially by appearing on television and consulting on deaths with a high media profile. Some of the cases have included: Robert F. Kennedy, Sharon Tate, John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, Kurt Cobain, JonBenét Ramsey, Dr. Herman Tarnower (the Scarsdale diet guru), Sunny von Bülow, the Branch Davidian incident, Vincent Foster, and Laci Peterson. He is a clinical professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and an adjunct professor of law at Duquesne University.
Quote: “I’m not suggesting for one moment that we stop professional football. If I said that, I better leave the country. I think more attention should be paid by scientists and biomechanical engineers in coming up with a better helmet.” | “A football helmet gives you an awful lot of protection… but you don’t have to be a doctor or an engineer or even a football player to realize that the helmet does not block out all the measured force produced when some 300-pound player with a hand the size of a Christmas ham whacks you in the head dozens of times a game, season after season.”
