Before she started her own clothing label, fashion doyenne Donna Karan, now 70, was design team chief for the Anne Klein brand. In 1984, Karan and her then husband, Stephan Weiss, launched a new business “to design modern clothes for modern people.” Nicknamed “The Queen of Seventh Avenue” (also known as New York City’s Fashion Avenue), she later created DKNY for less-expensive designs aimed at younger women. In 2015, Karan resigned her position at her eponymous company to devote more time to Urban Zen, a “lifestyle brand” she founded in 2007.
Quote: “I design from instinct. It’s the only way I know how to live. What feels good. What feels right. What is needed. Give me a problem and I will approach it creatively, from my gut.” | “To me, design and style should work toward making you look good and feel good without a lot of effort — so you can get on with the things that matter.”
