That is a fundamental question, especially today when more than half of American Jews surveyed say they do not believe in God. Moment magazine put the question to 14 Jewish thinkers from various walks of life — and as one might expect, there were many different opinions. All are interesting and worthy of consideration.

An excellent historical overview of the question was contained in an article from MyJewishLearning.com by Daniel Septimus. He ended the piece this way: “So, must a Jew believe in God? In a sense, it depends how you define four words: ‘must,’ ‘Jew,’ ‘believe,’ and, of course, ‘God.’ In short: probably. And probably not.” Truly a Jewish answer!
