For more than four decades, Dennis M. Ross, 69, has been an influential American diplomat and advisor to several presidents, including Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Most notably, he has served as a special envoy focusing on the Middle East in general, and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict in particular. In addition to his diplomatic work, he is a prolific writer on the subject of the Middle East. Ross was raised by his Jewish mother and non-Jewish stepfather; he became a religiously observant Jew only after the 1967 Six-Day War.
