Denis Goldberg, a longtime comrade of Nelson Mandela and a prominent figure in the struggle against apartheid, passed away at age 87 at the end of April 2020. He was imprisoned for 22 years for his activities against the apartheid regime. After his release in 1985, he moved to London and then back to South Africa in 2002, where he continued to campaign for social justice causes.
Quote: “I grew up during World War Two. South Africa had racism by law but we sent soldiers to fight the Nazi racists. When you’re 12 years old, it doesn’t make sense. My real heroes were the people who said they’re not going to live under the absurd system of racism of the Nazis and were prepared to risk their lives. I think that was the biggest influence on my life, that if I was called on, I would have to do something.”
