Daniel Goleman, 74, is an author and journalist whose column about the brain and behavioral science appeared in The New York Times for more than a decade. His book Emotional Intelligence (1995) was on The Times best-seller list for a year and a half and was translated into 40 languages. Goleman’s Ted Talk “Why Aren’t We More Compassionate?” is linked below.
Quote: “Self-absorption in all its forms kills empathy, let alone compassion. When we focus on ourselves, our world contracts as our problems and preoccupations loom large. But when we focus on others, our world expands. Our own problems drift to the periphery of the mind and so seem smaller, and we increase our capacity for connection — or compassionate action.”
