He owns several sports franchises, including the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. Also, he has been a leading force in the redevelopment of downtown Detroit, the city of his birth. A multi-billionaire, Gilbert is a generous philanthropist; he and his wife have signed the Giving Pledge, which commits them to donating half of their money to charitable causes. Gilbert suffered a stroke in May 2019.
