Charlie Kaufman’s writing has been nominated for four Academy Awards and has garnered two BAFTAs, the British equivalent of the Oscars. The 60-year-old Kaufman wrote the screenplays for Being John Malkovich (1999), Adaptation (2002), and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). He first directorial effort was on the movie Synecdoche (2008), which the late film critic Roger Ebert characterized as “the best movie of the decade” in 2009.
Quotes: “You are what you love. Not what loves you.” | “When I’m writing, I’m trying to immerse myself in the chaos of an emotional experience, rather than separate myself from it and look back at it from a distance with clarity and tell it as a story. Because that’s how life is lived, you know?”
